Ingredients

  • 1 loaf French bread, sliced lengthwise
  • 1/2 cup salted butter, softened
  • 2 tbsp olive oil
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1/2 tsp dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp salt (adjust if using unsalted butter)

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven broiler and position the rack 6–8 inches from the heating element.
  • Slice the French bread in half lengthwise and place cut-side up on a baking sheet.
  • In a bowl, mix butter, olive oil, garlic, parmesan, basil, oregano, salt, and pepper until smooth.
  • Spread the butter mixture evenly over the bread halves, reaching the edges.
  • Broil for 2–5 minutes, watching closely, until edges are golden and cheese is bubbling.
  • Remove from oven, cool briefly, slice into pieces, and serve warm.

Notes

For extra sturdiness when serving with pasta or soup, broil an additional minute. Fresh herbs should be added after baking to prevent burning.
